Anyone set up a 503 C corporation public charity of foundation?

So my father was killed in a sudden car wreck when I was 16. I am 41 now. All these years I have been grappling with the emotions of thinking back and the memories. I am thinking of setting up a non-profit charity or a foundation in his honor.

I can grow it over time and then show my kids what my father stood for.

Has anyone else set up something similar to honor your parents?
