Anyone experienced with Jack Shea's IRA Trust?

I've heard a lot of negatives in general with checkbook IRAs - Jack Shea has paperwork to set up a trust that is funded by your IRA custodian but has an account in your local bank and your trustee has ability to write checks on it. Does anyone use this or know someone who has? Has it passed any IRS challenges? Thank you!
