Historic Buildings

I'm living in, and in the process of restoring one of the oldest houses in Town (1890’s). The previous owner said that several important figures in the city’s history had once lived in this house. I know there are some tax benefits to registering a house as a historic home. I also know that there is some red tape involved in restoring a historic house.

Does anyone have experience with historic houses, information or links on how to register a historic building, or information about the criteria for what is or is not a historic house, and what the limitations are on renovation of such a house?
