@Betty Carson

To clarify, one does not typically purchase a home using a self directed IRA funds. "Home" usually refers to our personal residence.

If you are meaning purchase an investment property, then that is absolutely something you can do with an IRA or 401k, so long as it is accessible for transfer. The IRA will own the property and all proceeds from the property return to the IRA in a tax-sheltered fashion.

There are a variety of self directed IRA plans and services. Trust companies setup accounts and provide processing. Advisors implement plans that will provide you with checkbook control and generally come with advisory consulting to help you adhere to IRS rules.

There is a good bit of information here on BP about the topic.  The best way to really learn about your options is to speak with a few of the firms that specialize in providing these services - as well as your tax advisor.

Best of luck as you explore the potential of a self directed IRA.
