Calculate cost of selling stock for real estate purchase

David Yee
Posted

Hello! I have some stock in Fidelity and Etrade. Some were acquired in the last year, others over 10 years ago. Some are individual stocks and some are mutual funds, etc. I'm trying to determine which stocks to sell so that I incur the lowest amount of taxes, reduce costs of sale, etc. Do these companies typically provide calculators on their websites that will tell me how much tax and other fees I will have to pay as a result of selling certain stock?

Thank you!

I can't speak for Fidelity or Etrade, but Interactive Brokers has a Tax Optimizer tool that is very helpful.  You can look it up on their website or Youtube.

I agree 100% with @Michael Plaks advice on this one though.  I would make sure you are aware of all of your options.
