Requiring Renters Insurance

I am a newbie here and want to eventually be a landlord in the future. I spoke to a insurance agent about renters insurance and he stated how I should put in the lease that I require the tenants carry renters insurance. Is this legal? I don't know if this is him trying to draw up more business for himself but I'm interested to hear from everyone on what they think!

Thanks
