Went to close on a SFH and the property is still in probate

I put a house under contract with a quick close, and was told the house was still in probate a few days before closing. Apparently, the 2 owners both signed all the papers, and one of them paid the attorney, but the second did not pay. The person I talked to at the title company told me it was the attorney who complicated things, because since he was not paid, he never submitted it, and now we have to go through the process again.

Is this something that typically happens? How long does it usually take to finish probate? I am trying to get a better understanding of what is happening and the things I need to be looking out for. Any help is greatly appreciated.
