When purchasing with a 1031, how do you sell with a lease option?

My parents are purchasing a property using a 1031 exchange that my wife and I are going to rent and improve. Can my wife and I purchase the property through a lease option agreement, with the purchase occurring after the 1031 holding period has expired, without jeopardizing the 1031 exchange?
