How do I remove a paid off debt from my credit report?

I have good/excellent credit and just had a small collections under $100 show up on my report. The rep at the collections agency said they do not remove paid debts from the credit report, but I know this is often done. How can I get the debt removed from my credit report after I pay it? TIA!
