Bay Area Real Estate investing.

So I am new in the real estate investing, yet to make a first deal. Living in the bay area and trying to start in the wholesale business side, it seems brutal to start in when looking in to it more there are so many different company's pretty much doing the same thing in a large scale. example the we buy ugly houses company and many more of it. it almost seems like it is kind of late for a beginner to start in that area. so contemplating if maybe starting in the rehab side of the business is more lucrative and more realistic other than almost going door by door looking for someone who wants to sell their homes. that involving financing for deals is a whole different realm. any thoughts on this??
