When is a HELOC worth applying for?

Good Afternoon, I'm currently applying a HELOC through a credit union. I honestly wasn't expecting it to be as intimidating as a traditional morgage loan. Other than the appraisal, what other fees can i expect? Is it worth doing for a $45,000 line of credit?
