Entering the Mortgage Industry

Hello. I am new to this site and so far I am very pleased with all of the information that I have obtained in such a short time. I want to cross over into the Mortgage Industry and I would just like to get an idea of the best route to take. Should I be focusing on being independent or in-house ? Any direct training/meetings/seminars with originating/processing/underwriting? What lead generating tools are used? I don't want to put my R.E. license in escrow. I am in the Detroit area. I hope that this post can help me out.
