what are alternative asset strategies ?

Where do you put most of your savings while you are educating yourself to learn how to invest in real estate so it doesn't rot away through inflation in the bank?

It seems like a huge waste to me to just put money in the bank while I'm educating myself on what I'm doing before I plump down a large amount into real estate in one form or another is there any other places you guys like to put your cash besides a bank account for at least a little more return while waiting?
