Bird dog vs. Subscription Service vs. DIY Research

Investors: Do you do the research yourself? Do you hire an assistant or bird dog? Or do you pay for a subscription service?

Bird dogs: Do you keep track of your research in a simple old-school spreadsheet, or do you like nicer software?

What are your preferences and why?

I'd appreciate any answers/advice!

I'm asking because I want to know what works best for finding leads, as someone who wants to bird-dog for investors.
