Am I using my VA loan in a smart way?

Hello I'm a sergeant in the Marines but I'm getting out vary soon. I'm already working the deal to use my VA loan to get a duplex in my home town Stockton CA. Basically I will rent one side for around 1300 and my side I will pay around 500 to finish up the mortgage payments. Dose this seem like a good deal for the first one and any recommendations are valued. As well can I evict someone from a side because I will be staying in it even if they have a lease?

Thanks you
