Question about rehab costs/contractors

Hi BP family!

Question today is, and it may be a dumb question, does the contractor have to see the property before giving estimates? What if I just want to know repair estimates on a property I find on redfin/zillow? Should I just do some rough estimates myself with those properties? 

Any advice would be greatly appreciated!
