Solar Power for added Income?
I live in Portland Maine, I have been thinking on placing solar panels on some of my rental's land. The idea is to supplement (or cash flow) my own electric bill at a different home I live in. The home is too tree covered for solar.
Does anyone have any experience "Selling" power back to the utilities company?
Why is every inch of unused farm land not covered in solar? Seems like the ultimate "Passive Income"
What problems have people encountered? Especially using solar on land they do not occupy.
Thanks!

Hi Ray- I worker in the RI state energy office during the ARRA days on remewable energy legislation, various renewable energy grant programs, etc. The ROI on solar is terrible- generally very negative with the panels breaking down before you break even. Hence why its been so heavily government subsidized for so long- the economics dont work without subsidies. Even with subsidies its a mixed bag depending on the part of the country you are in and the amount of sunlight received. I can tell you that feasiblity studies show the New England area isnt good for solar and Maine especially is not good.
If you are paying utilities for your own residence or any of your rentals, the best bang for your buck is insulation. Check for any insulation dead spots (your utility company or state energy office may offer this seevice for free) and fill them with the most energy efficient insulation you can get.
