Estimating rehab costs

Curious how you guys estimate repairs before getting actual quotes from G.C.'s There's a ton of rehab calculators out there but it seems they all require you to input the dollar amount. How am I supposed to estimate the costs before getting quotes in order to evaluate if it's even a good deal or not?
