Wisconsin warranty deeds and mortgages

I’m looking to verify some information regarding deeds and titles. I’m currently looking at property in which the county website states the owner has a warranty deed on the property. The home owner claims to have a mortgage however. I’ve done quite a bit of research on the subject and cannot seem to find the specific answer to my question. My assumptions are that the warranty deed only claims the current owner received the home free and clear from the previous owner at the time of purchase and that a warranty deed does not indicate the current owner actually holds the property free and clear? So with that, a property owner holding a warranty deed may still have a mortgage on the property? I hope this makes sense and thanks in advance for any help.
