Asking for Recommendations

I have been a bit confused lately on the rules regarding asking for recommendations from my fellow members.  I have read many posts requesting recommendations for property management software, credit unions, funding sources, etc.  I posted a request for a recommendation on good insurance companies for multi-unit rental buildings.  The post was removed and I was told that what I was doing was considered advertising.

I am a big fan of BiggerPockets. I am not trying to be difficult, but I just do not have a good grasp on what we consider acceptable.  I have read the rules, but this seems to be unclear to me.  Any help would be appreciated.
