Inheriting My Father’s Real Estate Business

I’m 24 years old and currently in medical school. My dad has been talking about retiring for the last few years and we have been trying to figure out what to do with the family business. My father’s business suffers from the same symptoms that many small businesses face in that a lot of its success is based on the fact that he does everything himself. He has a few agents but on average his return is 4-500% what they are able to bring in. We are both concerned that his leaving the business will make it die. I am interested in your thoughts on the matter and I am looking for advice about where to begin. Should I seek consulting? Where can I find advice on running a real estate brick and mortar business from a distance? (Also if any of you want to move across the country and become a broker in the rural south...)
