what is the best way to protect your money  when hiring a contractor . I hired one recommend by my realtor got a price and  invoice ($6200)  for the amount and repairs and materials  of course half down to start  for material's . started 3 weeks ago  well couple 2x4s later and 6 pieces of paneling 2 sheets of tin telling me ran out of money  and amount of work done lets see frame around a window and 2 sheets paneling up oh also used some recycled 2x4s also

Mindy is Right.. I have done a few rehabs contractors issue that can drain your $$ is add ons and project delays.

What I have started to do is for each job in a project get a time frame and price.

then before they start have them group by weeks what they are going to do each week.  make it liberal Ex: if they say I can paint the house in 1 day give them 2days or replacing the doors I can do in 2 hrs give them 3Hrs

then each week they must have done what was suggested and charge them like $100 each day delay your project will be done on time.

add ons are Ex: oh while i am here I can do XYX. make sure you get how much more that will be and extra time it will take.
