Need advice on conservative real estate investments for $500,000

Good afternoon.  My husband and I have $500,000 that we would like to invest in real estate. We're considering the purchase of multi-family apartment complexes but wonder if there are other investment options that pay consistent and high dividends.  Thanks in advance for any feedback you'd like to provide.
