To mitigate ID theft consider freezing your credit!
If you have any reason to think you have been or may be a victim of identity theft then consider freezing you Credit. This is probably your best preventative measure also. No doubt it is a PITA to freeze and thaw your credit but it is much better than the alternative. ID theft is a particular worry for RE investors (who borrow anyway) because of the devastation it could do to your credit.
