If your looking to do it yourself i have seen on some threads on driving for dollars. Driving around your neighborhood and looking for distress properties, try and find out who the owner is send them a letter telling them your interested in buying their property at whatever address and hopefully they are motivated get back to you and you can put the house under contract.
