Powell Speak- A look into the Fed's mind
I'm curious what others think on the topic. We know rates are high, and the Fed historically baffles the moves they make. Here are some high-level takeaways from Powell.
He seems to feel rates have not been high enough, long enough right now, and evidence they are not restrictive yet. (*More hikes ahead?) If the economy continues tightening ahead.
They see the labor market is tight, but is gradually cooling (Should they pause to observe?). Ducked on acknowledging inflation is cooling, by saying they don't know if lower inflation will persist.
Yields could reduce the Fed's need to hike more.
Other members (majority of) of the Fed seem to disagree with his stance on the overall approach to more hikes being needed.
Historically they get it wrong, what do you see ahead? And how is the environment affecting your decisions?
