Austin Texas - Remodel/Renovation Permit

Hi,

I'm considering a renovation/remodeling project for a 30 year old house in Austin TX. I was wondering if people could provide some guidance or advice they wish they had when they underwent this process themselves. How easy/difficult is it to get the permit to say remodel your bathroom and kitchen and how long did the permitting process take? This is for the 78717 zipcode area.
