How to go about foundation issues?
Hello!
I am new to the real estate world and am looking to get my feet wet by “house hacking” a duplex or other small multi family property. After looking at several properties in Cincinnati, Ohio I have found a duplex that I believe would be a good investment. However, there seems to be some foundational issues. One corner of nearly every floor droops to one side, and the outside is noticeably curved as well. Seeing that this house was built in 1889, I wondered if this was normal settling, or if there might be a major foundational problem.
I understand that it is tough to tell through an online forum, and that every case is different. In general, though, what have been your experiences with foundation issues? Should I run now? Hire a structural engineer to take a look? Get a few bids from local contractors and take that into account if/when I make an offer?
All insights are very much appreciated. Thank you all in advance!
