Duplex square footage needed

Looking to purchase a lot with square footage of 3497. I would like to build a 2 unit duplex roughly 1k sq.ft each side. Need to know if I can build this on 1 lot or would I need to purchase 2 lots? This will be my first investment and need as much advice as possible on how many sq. feet a lot needs to be in order to build a 2 unit duplex. Thanks in advance.
