As I have worked with many builders for several new constructions over period of time; few suggestions. Builder should have: 

• Proper license with state of michigan
• Done recent project of similar kind in terms of square footage, style, location and price range
• Time availability to manage the project full time
• Shown experience finishing on time line you are looking for
• Risk policy
• Good handle of cost and contractor crew to work with

There are few other items, you can learn and tweak.
