Single Family Home damaged by fire - Go for it or Stay Away?

Looking at a possible deal purchasing a home where a fire destroyed the attached garage but did substantial smoke damage throughout the home.  

What are the concerns with doing a complete refurb?  What are some things to watch out for to ensure all smoke smell is eradicated?
