How much is an architect?

On average, how much does it cost to hire an architect for a luxury single-family home project? How do they charge? All upfront, 50%-50%, and also, do they work with you on the entire construction cycle, or simply plan everything, design the home, plans, etc. And then it's time for the construction guy to come in?
