electric meters duplex to sfh us----and back to duplex in future

I have a duplex approx. 2200 sf.  Large 2 bedroom side is approx. 1600 sf.  There are 2 electric meters now.

Outside boxes (both meters) have been updated to brand new with plenty of space / capacity for future.  We put pass thru in interior door to 'use' as single family.  The larger half of duplex- interior- all new up to date wiring.  The smaller side interior wiring is older and has not been upgraded.  It was working ok on older system for last tenant.  The much smaller side will be used for storage misc.

What I want to do: Since using as SFH - run wiring in outside box from small side into outside box of larger side and have only 1 meter with a blank or cap on second meter- with the idea that electrical will be working in smaller side (will only use smaller side electrical for lights, very nominal use.) - I wish to do this so can one day in future (if decide to do) use as a duplex with 2 meters.

Essentially, I want to be able to use electrical for both sides now -(basically use as Single family now)--- and reserve the option to go back to duplex (with 2 meters) use in the future if I wish.   Question  to all you BIGPOCEKTEERS --how do I best achieve this?  Give me your opinions, advice, suggestions.

Thanks, JV

(( ps- not concerned about maximum profit/ return,  roi etc, as this will be for family and or extended family use only))

Let's hear it !
