New primary build = opportunity to buy rental???

Hi All -

I am an interesting scenario which I would love some help with.  My husband and I purchased a 5 acre lot where we are going to build our forever home.  Our current primary home is on the market (hopefully selling fast).  The house build will likely take about a year as we are not in a hurry.  Does anyone have experience with buying a future rental property and living in it for a short period of time while primary home is bring built?  Are their any rules I need to be aware of?  Is this a good strategy?  Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

Brooke
