Denver CO - Spec Home Building

We're a GC and moving to Denver in Oct. We would like to get into real estate investing there but from all that I'm reading it's a extremely competative sellers market. Most posts say 'better to stay away for now'. So now we are talking about building spec homes. Is this a good stragety?  Do you think that even with the market there as it is are good desls on lots? Any suggestions?
