Single Family Home On Multi Family Zone

Joe Clifford
Posted

Hi - I just purchased a single family home sitting in a multi family zoned lot. What would be the Steps to make this home a legal 2 family. I'm looking to build a 1 bedroom apt and  live in the front part of the home. Great potential, but just stuck on where to start looking for legal approval before fully jumping in. Considering i'll be living there is there do I need to apply for a permit or get permission from the town to rent a "Room"?  The Majority of the homes on my street are all multifamily (Duplex/ Triplex).

Call the city building permits department and they should be able to answer your questions.  Some cities require licenses to rent out properties, but it varies by city.
