Building Track Record w/ Fannie/Freddie by investing as an LP?

I've been told different things from a few syndicators:

If I were to invest as an "active-passive" investor, would I be able to add those units/deals to my portfolio/as a track record if I were to syndicate my own deal later on down the road and needed to get a freddie/fannie loan.

Is this true or not?
