2 - Unit FHA Loan Question

Hello All,

I have recently began the pre-approval process for a 2-Unit and am interested in going with the FHA loan. However, when speaking to my mortgage broker he told me something I have never heard before and wanted to see if anyone else has heard the same. He mentioned to me that when getting the 2 - unit the total mortgage payment cannot exceed more than 20% of what my current rent is as I am renting an apartment. So, my apartment rent is currently $850 dollars which would mean my mortgage payment on the 2 - unit could be no more than $1,020? That would severely limit me to what I am looking at for 2 - Units. Please let me know if this seems correct. Thank you in advance.
