My First Multi-Family Home

I'm kind of stuck on starting my first multi-family four plex. I have read plenty of books and listened to podcasts, but still don't know exactly how to start. I know just jumping into it is the best way to do it, but I feel like I'm missing a key detail in starting. I plan on using my VA loan, I applied for a pre-approval from one lender but didn't get anywhere near what I wanted, granted I probably didn't fill it out correctly. Any help would be wonderful, like who would be the best lenders to go to, what's the best way to get started, things I need to do or know that beginners usually mess up on.
Thank you all for your help and knowledge.
