Looking at a property in California, Notice of trustee sale.

I know as an investor it is best to try to purchase a property from the owner in the NOD phase, however there is a property in the Notice of trustee sale and has an auction date set for 8-23-13. Is there any way I can try to help these owners before they go to Auction and still make a handsome profit? Or is this not possible in the state of California?
