Pre-foreclosure deal making help

Hi, I am researching the different areas of investing and looking for the one that seems like a good fit for me. I started with foreclosure sales and decided it was not a good fit because of the starting price was high due to banks running up the auction. I was looking into buying pre-foreclosures with the letter sending and was wondering what are some examples of good deals to offer the said party who's property is in distress? Thanks guys!!
