A homeowner wants some money if he decides to sell his house to me. I know it is illegal to pay him. But I also heard of using a bill of sale method? Can you please advise how it is done legally? Thanks.

Using a bill of sale method is a gray area at best. So be very careful.

The idea is you purchase an item from the seller that is difficult to value. Something subjective like art or antiques are always a good bet. You should avoid things like cars, technology, furniture, etc. which are easily valued.

Avoid this technique if you can. If you are in this position offer to help them move and pay for moving van, boxes, packing supplies, etc. This way, it is a business expense and justifiable.
