Sheriff sale vs trustee sale in California

I'm learning about trustee sale in California (foreclosure on mortgage lien), and notice that occasionally, there is also the sheriff sale (foreclosure on judgment lien). What is the different between them? And what lien would survive, what would get wipe out in a sheriff sale in California?

Any pro that can help a newbie out? Thank you!
