Buying foreclosure properties in New York

I am thinking about purchasing foreclosure property in New York. I have heard this can be a lengthy process but not real able to find much on Google. Does anyone know what this will entail? The properties do currently have residents still there. One is in Preforeclosure, the other is already in Foreclosure. Any tips or suggestions are greatly appreciated!
