Up for auction but still listed as short sale?

found a property that's listed as a foreclosure but noticed that there's an auction date coming up.  After a few emails the listing agent said if they have a contract there'd be in no auction.  Is that possible?  He's the current owners agent and not the bank or attorney's agent.
