How to follow-up on a REO lead??

I got a lead from a friend on what was a million dollar property in her neighborhood. Then the main house burned down leaving only a 2 bedroom guesthouse. The owner had stopped making payments before the fire, and now it's bank owned. How do I go about finding out which bank owns it and who to talk to and what to check before buying? Thanks!
