Inheriting renters - can I change lease on MTM

Lisa Min
Posted

I am about to buy a duplex and am inheriting renters. One is on a lease until the end of the year and another is month to month. Is it fine to put the MTM tenants on my own lease once the deal goes through? I wanted to check references and make sure they have an income, but wasn't sure if I would be stuck the possibility of non-paying tenants in light of COVID moratorium laws if they are unemployed. They are also paying hundreds of dollars under rental prices for my area so I wanted to raise the rent. I was told mistakenly told these tenants were paying much higher rent when I agreed to take them on. Then found out shortly after my realtor made a mistake with rental incomes.
