Building New Construction

Hello BP community - 

Are there any investors/developers out there that might share some insight on getting started with new building projects?  I'm a new investor that is looking to get involved with property development - purchasing land, building homes, and then either selling or renting them long-term. Is this even a viable strategy?  I understand the answer to that question may vary depending on location, but any information or advice on how and where to get started would be much appreciated.
