Qualifying Hard Money Lenders

What do people generally do to qualify or do due diligence on hard money lenders

Had a lender back out recently, and looking down that path, but have found disconnected phone lines, websites that don't work, fake facebook profiles, etc.

How do you find them (or investors)?
