Seeking advice when researching areas

I am looking for ways to understand a specific area. I want to know how I can determine if properties will appreciate in value and population/growth expectancy. Where would I find this information? Is there a specific website? Should I look into the county itself? 

As mentioned, I am confused on how to gather the necessary information when researching properties. Are there any other questions I should be asking of local agents and other topics I should know when purchasing a property.
